Abstract

The candelilla plant (Euphorbia antisyphilitica Zucc) is mainly used for wax extraction. However, it contains antioxidant compounds which have been poorly studied. The objective of this research was to characterize chemically the candelilla plant obtained from three different localities, San Jerónimo (SJ) in Zacatecas; Estanque de León (EL) and Tortuga (T) in Coahuila. In addition, the yield of the phenolic rich extract and its antioxidant activity was determined. The chemical analysis for SJ showed a significant difference for ash and fat content,
as well as for free nitrogen extract with values of 11.70 g, 5.93 g and 63.20 g per 100 g of sample, respectively. In terms of yield, the locality of T showed the higher content of the ERCP (10.5 mg g-1). Likewise, for antioxidant activity (DPPH• , FRAP and ABTS•+), the locality of T obtained the best results compared to the other localities with values for IC50 determination by DPPH• of 39.52 ± 3.84 µg mL-1 and ABTS•+ 34.75±0.21 µg mL-1; together with FRAP assay 41.73 ± 4.21 µg mL-1 at 50 µg mL1. Based on the FTIR analysis, the three localities presented an outstanding peak at the wavelength of 1025 (cm-1) which refers to the functional group C – O – H characteristic of the phenolic compounds. The present study showed that candelilla plant from these localities can be used as source of molecules with strong antioxidant activity, for biotechnological, food or pharmaceutical applications.
